4 [Effective] Steps on How To Give Your Dog a Haircut

Every dog needs a haircut every once in a while – whatever the type of hair it has. And you don’t need to be even a graduate hairdresser to do that, though it takes some practice. 

Besides, cutting your dog’s hair would not only give your dog a new stylish look but also more alleviation and comfort on hot summer days, not least when it comes to thick fur dog breeds.

Here are four simple steps on how to give your dog a haircut-

STEP ONE – BATHING

Even though some dogs enjoy having a bath, most of them would rather skip it. But bathing your dog before cutting his hair is inevitable – no matter whether it likes it or not. All the dirt has to be removed from its hair coat. After you bathe your dog, however, rub it with a towel by letting the hair damp, which would help in the cutting process.

Sometimes, it’s advisable to use a pet softener, especially for a type of hair like the one a Maltese-dog has.

STEP TWO – BRUSHING

There are so many different-sized dog brushes on the market today that you can choose from. But the size of the brush you need depends on the size of the dog you have. And when it comes to brushing your dog’s face – always use a smaller one. 

Anyway, brushing your dog would help in untangling any tangled mess – and catch sight of some uneven areas that you need to align with the other parts of the hair.

STEP THREE – CUTTING

If you cut your dog’s hair with an electric razor, don’t worry about any uneven areas, because the optional trimmer of the razor would make all the hair-coat even.

Important: when you use an electric razor, never apply too much pressure – so as to avoid cutting any moles on its skin.

If you cut your dog’s hair with scissors, however, always start with the legs. Then proceed with the chest, neck, belly, and the last part – its face. And don’t forget the hair between their toes. 

If you’ve never cut your dog’s hair before, you can always take it to a hairdresser and get a glimpse of the whole process.

Important: always check your dog’s nails, and trim them when necessary. If your dog hasn’t done much walking or running activity lately, which would basically wear down its nails, problems like toe-pain and nail-infection might appear.

STEP FOUR – DRYING

You did the bathing, brushing, and cutting process. 

Now, it’s time for the drying one.

Many dogs get afraid at the noise a blow dryer makes. Therefore, it’s preferable to use one that makes less noise. If you don’t have such a dryer, you can buy it from an animal product shop. Still, if you can’t afford one, there is nothing wrong with using your personal dryer, but it will take some time before your dog gets used to the noise.
