The smell, taste, and crunch of bacon tingle our taste buds. For the same reason, bacon is common in our breakfast tables and grace our faces with smiles. When taking this great occasional treat, the temptation to share it with our kitties is excellent. However, we wonder if it is safe to ravish our cats with the tasty slices.
It is safe for cats to eat bacon, but only as occasional treats. Cats are carnivores and regularly need meat. Bacon’s tasty appeal will surely tickle your cat’s taste buds and turn its head. However, when you treat your furball with bacon, a small piece and an occasional treat will do. Always remember that bacon must not be a daily treat for your cat.
The amount of salt in the bacon is harmful to the cat when served daily. A small slice of bacon has approximately 138 milligrams of sodium. This amount of sodium is ten times higher than the daily standard sodium intake for your cat. Cat’s diet should not have excess sodium. Too much salt in the cat’s system can lead to dehydration, clogged blood vessels, obesity, high blood pressure, and salt poisoning. Besides, bacon is fatty and unhealthy for animals as small as cats. Excessive fat is also notorious for obesity and digestive problems.
You can consult your veterinarian before feeding your cat with raw meat. If you must give your cat bacon, ensure it is fresh, not cured, and genuinely raw. Your cat’s bowl, chopping board, and knife should also be clean.
If you must feed your cat bacon, seek the guidance and advice of your veterinarian. Ensure the bacon you feed your cat is fully cooked and chopped to bite-sized bits. Avoid feeding your kitty bacon daily.
