Are Boxer dogs easy to train?

Boxers are super athletic dogs and a suitable breed for anyone that likes to regularly run and walk, as they require a lot of exercise, given their size, weight and mentality. However, you may have wondered whether or not Boxers are easy to train.

If you’re thinking of welcoming a dog to the home and have considered a Boxer, this is a question that you may have asked yourself, as at first, Boxers can come across as very intimidating, given their size. But this couldn’t be far from the truth, as Boxers are very friendly, sociable dogs and with the correct training, can be a welcomed addition to any household.

So, are Boxers easy to train and what should you consider?

Boxers can be easy to train under the correct influence, however, can quite easily become very anxious and unfriendly if theta are trained incorrectly. We suggest training your Boxer from the get-go when they are puppies, so they can easily get into the hang of it and establish a positive attitude.

  1. Socialise them as much as possible.

This seems like a no brainer for all dog breeds, however, given the size of a Boxer and their weight, it’s especially important to ensure that they are correctly socialised. We recommend introducing them to a wide variety of puppies when they are young, so they can be used to being around other dogs and families.

We suggest taking them to puppy classes and introducing them to friends and family that have dogs too.

  2. Start off with basic training commands

It’s a good idea to start teaching your Boxer basic training commands from the get-go, this could include commands like, sit and lay, as these are fairly straightforward and can easily be taught with a few treats.

It’s important to understand that training your dog will take time and discipline from both parties, a dog won’t be trained overnight, but with consistency and the right attitude, it’s very possible.

Once your Boxer has got the hang of the basics you can then move on to more challenging commands.

  3. Take your Boxer for a run

Boxers are very energetic dogs and require a lot of exercise, they are also very fast dogs and can run up to a speed of 38 to 45 miles per hour according to Miniature Friends. Given the Boxer’s exercise requirements of a minimum of 2 hours a day, you shouldn’t consider this breed if you aren’t able to provide this, as, over time, this will impact their mental health and their physical health.

However, if you are very active, this could be the perfect companion for you, as they can join you on your journey!

  4. Take them outside

It’s super important to take your Boxer out and about outside the home, so they can not only stretch their legs and get the exercise they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but it’s an important part of their social development. Because who wants to be locked inside all the time?

This could include taking them to the local park, seeing friends, into town or even to people watch – as dogs love to watch the world go by. This will help improve their understanding of the world and will help get them used to social situations.

It’s a good idea to start off with minimal social contact and then work your way up to busier environments. If you take your dog to a party or a place where there are lots of people, they will very quickly become overwhelmed and very anxious. They then could be worried about leaving the house in the future.
